IMPORTANT MONUMENTS IN CHENNAI

Chennai ranks as one of the four ‘metros’ of India. ‘metro’ is short for ‘metropolis’ a greek word that means a big city. The other three metors are delhi, Mumbai, and kolkata. Formerly called madras the city was renamed Chennai. In 1996. it is located on the east coast and is a poor city. Ships form many countries of the world come to Chennai harbour.

The English east India company built the fort st george here in 1653. forts are built the fort or a settlement from enemies. In those days the English were at war. With the French. There were attacks on the fort by the French who were based at pondicherry. Finally the English won.

Fort here has 6m high walls. There is a museum inside the fort and also the st Mary;s church built in 1680. the church is built in a style that is called Gothic.

A traveller arriving at Chennai central station will get to see the large brick railway station. The southern railway offices and the general hospital are near by. The ripon building which has the offices of Chennai corporation is another famous the high court building is in mughal style.

The government museum at egmore has a collection of rare sculptures from chola chera and pandya periods besides the stores sculptures there is a metal ware section also it has beautiful bronze and brass statuettes the art gallery here has old and new paintings other buildings here are the egmore railway station and the rajaji hall

Chennai has two famous temples the kapaleeswar temple at mylapore and thr parthasarathy temple at tiruvallikeni they have beautiful architectural features the palaani andavar temple or at vadapalani

The thousand light mosque in Chennai was built by a nawab of arcat around 1800 the walls of the mosque are decorated with saying from the Koran the triplicane mosque is an older mosque in the city



Among the newer structures is valluvaarkottam Is a memorial built in 1976 in honour of thiruvalluvar verses from thirukkural are written on the walls there is a life size state of thiruvalluvar here
The guidy national park is near the rajbhavan you can see black buck S spotted deer peacocks and mongoose here a snake park is also here the birla planetarium is nearby there is a zoo at vandalore
